This is where I tell you how great I am. Well, don't ask me, ask my dogs. They know I'm great. Oh, you mean as a piano teacher. Yeah, I'm good at that. I've been teaching for twenty-five years. I've taught students as young as 4 1/2 and as old as 80. I teach classical, jazz, rock and pop, blues, improvisation, composing, theory, you name it, if it's at the piano, I teach it. I was one of the original staff pianists at Nordtrom Old Orchard. I've played on the cruise ships that dock at Navy Pier. I've played in many of the downtown hotel lobbies. I've played piano all over the greater Chicagoland area for a very long time. But I love teaching even more than I love playing.

What am I like as a teacher? Funny, hard-working, nerdy, thorough, quirky, did I mention funny? Pleasant, very knowledgeable, insert other complimentary things here.

What I teach

Conventional Piano

Note reading, scales, rhythm, ear-training, chords, sight-reading, analysis. From the very beginning through advanced repertoire. A heavy emphasis on the great composers, in much the same way that one reads great authors in school, and comic books outside of school, but there is also time for folk music, jazz, and pop to keep things interesting. We'll learn music by Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Chopin, Debussy, Tchaikovsky, Haydn...all the great western composers, as well as newer (and older!) ones you've likely never heard of...but whose music you or your child will love!

Jazz

Students who know the fundamentals sometimes want to learn how to play by ear. Musicians who do play by ear would like you to think that it's 97.46% magic and the remaining 2.54% from an instruction manual kept under lock and key, accessible only to professionals. But much of what is called playing by ear is really playing by knowlege. I'll teach you how to interpret a jazz lead sheet and to play your own beautiful and sophisticated arrangment on the spot.

SEO and SEM

OK, I don't really teach these. I don't even know what SEM is! But since I'm doing this website on my own and not hiring someone to do it for me, I can only figure out so much about how to design this thing. So for now this item stays up, so the rest of the stuff on this page won't get thrown out of alignment. And as soon as I figure out how Sprite Sheets work, I can change these little icons from business images to music images.
